The Festival de Cannes – Immersive Competition 2024

by paradoxig

The Festival de Cannes announces eight projects as a part of the Immersive Competition including collective location-based virtual reality and mixed reality experiences, and projection mapping and holographic works. These carefully selected immersive works showcase the cutting edge of this new era in storytelling, challenging convention, embracing new technologies, and above all celebrating new artists as well as old.

The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the inaugural line-up for its Immersive Competition section, the first-ever selection of augmented and virtual reality works to screen at the austere French film fest. The lineup highlights cutting-edge VR and AR techniques and includes location-based virtual reality, mixed reality experiences, projection mapping, and holographic works.

The 8 competition titles and 6 out-of-competition screenings include works featuring such talents as Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Millie Bobby Brown, and Tahar Rahim.

Cannes has introduced a new immersive section with the goal of showcasing the up-and-coming international artists who are pushing the boundaries of storytelling and creating new narrative experiences beyond traditional cinema. This section is being organized in partnership with the French national film board, the CNC, and will feature immersive works displayed at an exhibition space in the Cannes Cineum and the Université Côte d’Azur, at the Georges Méliès film school campus.

A ceremony on May 23 will award the best immersive work, and the immersive sidebar will run from May 15-24 alongside the 2024 Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25).
